Tahitian Tattoos

posted by Ally, Spacious Planet, October 10, 2011

The word tattoo is of Polynesian origin. In Tahiti, the word is tatu. Traditional Tahitian tattoos indicated social rank for the upper classes of Tahitian society.

Full body tattoos were common but the face was only rarely tattooed. Chiefs, warriors, priests and commoners all had different types of tattoos and a person's position in society could be read from their body art. Tattoos were for both men and women and women often achieved the status of chief.

Women were tattooed on their buttock when they reached puberty. Before being tattooed young women could only eat food from her families house.
A tattoo indicated the women was old enough for courting.
