Pin-ups are photos or illustrations in magazines, on postcards or in calendars of female sex symbols. The term pinup girl originated in WWII when sales of pin-ups skyrocketed due to the war. However, the history of pin-ups goes back to the nineteenth century to the very beginnings of mass-produced photos.

Pin Up Girls

WWII triggered a boom in pin-up magazines in the United States. Pin-ups magazines and calendars continued to thrive in the 1950s with dozens of monthly magazines with national distribution.

Perhaps pin-up girls are a thing of the past. They're a product of a bygone era (WWII). When GIs were separated from their families -- it fueled demand for posters and calendars.
It was a gossip magazine's dream ― a high-society drama complete with promiscuity, drugs, insanity and murder. A teenage pinup girl whose beauty drove men mad with lust.
Despite having an abusive father who spent time in jail and growing up poor, Bettie was a good student in high school and voted most likely to succeed. She put herself through University and aspired to be an actress.
This was the age of prohibition. Prohibition pushed nightlife underground to wild jazz clubs where alcohol and cocaine were the drugs of choice and the party ran all night.
During the decade of the 1940s Lamarr was one of Hollywood's top stars, she stared in dozens of movies, she was married twice and had three children. But in the midst of all of this she somehow found time for a side engineering project that would revolutionize communication technology.
George Petty was a graphic artist who became famous for his pinup art. Petty began with a modest studio and used his daughter Marjorie Jule as a model for many of his pinup girls.
The 1930s were turbulent years often nicknamed The Dirty Thirties for the dust storms plagued North American farmers for much of the decade.
