The first stop for most visitors to Thailand is Bangkok. Bangkok is an exciting and modern city with a thriving night life and some great historical spots. The city has a massive complex of canals and rivers and was once known as the Venice of the east.
A visit to Bangkok is not complete without a tour of these waterways. The Grand Palace and many historical spots can be viewed from the river. It is interesting to see huge container ships alongside tiny traditional boats in this overcrowded river-way. Try to get a tour that visits the smaller canals where you can see day to day life such as women preparing food in open air riverside kitchens or kids swimming in the polluted waters of the river.
Thailand is a large country of 513 thousand square kilometres with lush rice fields, tropical rain forests, teakwood forests and a coastline with some of the nicest beaches of the world. Thailand is ethnically diverse and in addition to Thais there are many Chinese, Malay, Mon, Khmer and countless hill tribes in Thailand.
Thailand has many nature tours and this is a great option for those seeking a quieter option in Thailand. It is possible to explore the rainforest on a bamboo raft, visit cooling waterfalls deep in the forest, stay in jungle tree houses or floating raft-houses deep in the rainforest. It is often possible to meet the hill tribes who live a traditional lifestyle far away from the noise of Bangkok.
The popular beach spots such as Phuket, Phi Phi Islands and Koh Samui are some of the most picturesque spots in the world. These beach areas draw millions of visitors a year and have become a little over-developed in my mind. Although some of the resorts are still very quiet the streets are becoming crowded and noisy like Bangkok.
Thailand has a vibrant economy despite various set backs over the years. You will find many modern conveniences here not available in other South East Asian countries.
Thailand's political system is in constant upheaval. For instance, Thailand has had 17 constitutions and charters since 1932. The government seems to be in regular flux between military dictatorship to electoral democracy. The one thing lending stability to the country is the Thai monarchy. In fact, Thailand has the world's longest reining monarch. King Bhumibol Adulyadej has been leading the country since 1946. Thais have a genuine respect for the King and he is very popular. Be careful not to criticise the King as it will not only make you unpopular it is illegal.
The great natural beauty and rich cultural heritage of Thailand make it a rewarding trip for any visitor. This is why Thailand is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Thailand appeals to budget-conscious backpackers and luxury seeking tourists alike.
