Saipan locals are over 50% Filipino and Chinese and about 30% Pacific Islander (mostly Chamorro).
Saipan has good weather, beautiful beaches, good snorkeling and diving and is an excellent place to see world war II history. There are many artifacts of the battle of Saipan around the island. You can see banzai cliff where hundreds of Japanese civilians tragically took their own lives, the bunker that was the final command centre of the Japanese army in the last days of the battle, tanks, sunken ships and downed aircraft. You may find that Saipan is a sobering reminder of a terrible war.
The towns have both an American and South Pacific feel to them. There are a surprising number of hostess clubs and gambling spots (mostly video poker) around town. Many Saipan residents are working in the garment industry for very little pay. There have been a few controversies about the working conditions in the Saipan garment industry. Saipan garment companies can put the Made in USA label on clothing but the local labour conditions are far below those in the mainland.
Despite these difficulties Saipan locals love to smile and are generally friendly and helpful. Saipan's mix of Pacific Islander, Asian and American culture make for a unique little island in the sun.
