Oden is found in many convenience stores throughout Japan and is most popular in winter. It goes well with beer and oden restaurants are invariably drinking spots.

Some oden restaurants claim they have not changed the soup in their oden cooker since before world war II. They add new water each day to compensate for evaporation but they never change completely change the soup. So you can enjoy a very old soup stock! All this may make oden sound unappetising but it is actually very good. It is served with hot mustard called karashi. It is the perfect food to warm you up in winter and a good complement to a cold beer.
