BreakHere
Laos has retained its traditional culture after years of war and isolation. However, things are slowly changing and tourism in particular has exploded. Adventure travellers who have become bored with the saturated tourist traps in Thailand are increasingly interested in Laos as a more authentic and untouched experience.
Laos is the place time seems to have forgotten. It may have less spectacular attractions than Thailand or Cambodia but it compensates by being more laid back. Laos is a wonderful place to watch a Mekong River sunset while wasting the day away. You will find Laos is also safe. However, it does harbour just about every tropical disease you can imagine so make sure you are caught up with your vaccinations and have health insurance.
I recommend visiting the sleepy capital of Vientiane and the royal historic city of Luang Prabang which has many interesting (although not ancient) temples and lots of monks. The monks are very friendly about letting you photograph them and they are photogenic against the background of lush vegetation and gorgeous temples.
Another thing I like about Laos is that the sex industry is not very developed. In fact, I have heard it is illegal for local women to be alone with foreign men. It may be a kind of extreme rule but considering the fate of Thailand and other South Asian countries which have terrible HIV problems it is understandable. It is my hope that time will not find Laos and it will remain the untouched jewel it is today.
